Keswick was the first place in the Lake District National Park that Denise visited many years ago. From that first stay in the Newlands Valley, it became somewhere to return to time and again and now we are very fortunate to be able to call it our home. In 2009 we made the life-changing decision to give up the busy life in the South East. Owning and running a guesthouse was something we felt we would like to do together and the Lake District was a natural choice being an all-year destination and somewhere we loved to visit ourselves. From the first viewing of Portland House we both knew this was the place we wanted to be, it had a very homely feel and was in a wonderful location. Since we opened in 2010 we have not looked back. We have worked hard and are proud of our achievements, the highlight being awarded the Four Star Silver and Breakfast Awards by Visit Britain in recognition of the standard of service and Bed and Breakfast accommodation we provide. We are always happy to offer suggestions of places to go and things to see and have a large selection of walking guides, maps, books and games available for guests to use during their stay, including a copy of ‘Miles without Stiles’ for those who may prefer a less strenuous walk or have limited mobility.
We are keen bikers and understand how important comfortable accommodation along with a great breakfast is when touring. Individual riders and Motorcycle Club groups are welcome with the option of booking the whole house for stays of two or more nights. Rod is a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorcylists (IAM) and with prior notice is happy to lead rides that will show you the best of the Lake District roads.
We now have many regular guests who have become friends and share our passion for this wonderful part of the country and hope that first time visitors will go away with a love of the Lakes and the desire to return as we did all those years ago.
